Sierra's Sizzling Summer fun 2010
Sierra is a great place to spend the summer with all of the fun, creative and educational activities that we have planned. Signing up early will guarantee a space for your child in our program. If you would like your child to be in a safe environment with plenty of fun-filled activities to do, then Sierra School is the place for you!
Sierra offers the perfect balance between academics and recreational activities!
Mornings are devoted to academics, focusing on reading, writing and math. Whether your child needs extra help to be ready for the new school year, or wants to reinforce and enrich learning, then summer school is a great idea. Important skills tend to get a little rusty without regular practice over the summer. Taking some time each day to work on reading and math will keep those skills sharp. In the afternoon, children can participate in drama, art, music, sports and cooking. These activities will revolve around a particular theme, which lasts for two weeks.
Take a look at the themes we have planned to get an idea about all of these exciting events:
Super Sleuths -- Mystery is the focus of this theme. We can investigate secret codes, play the game “Clue,” and look for hidden treasures. We will also have fun making secret maps, performing experiments, and will read The Mystery of the Giant Footprints. The session will conclude with a costume party where children dress as their favorite super sleuth, spy or villain.
Fantastic Voyages -- Voyages real and imaginary will be the focus of our next theme. We will investigate a variety of places all over the world. We will read the fantasy story A Wrinkle in Time and imagine we are part of the story. Craft projects will include making miniature river rafts and decorating our own travel cases that can store our travel mementos. The culmination for the theme will be a Hawaiian Luau complete with tropical fruit shish kabobs and other island delicacies.
Wild Kingdom -- The final theme is where your children can take a walk on the wild side. We will make a giant rainforest mural, create our own wild animal masks, cook brown bear stew, and perform wild animal skits. We will read Where the Wild Things Are and Song of the Swallows. The theme will end with a jungle party where children can dress up and imitate their favorite wild animal.
Spectacular Sports -- Summer wouldn’t be complete without plenty of time for sports. Field games, relays, kites, and “Wheels Day” are some of the sports already planned. We will also create and perform our own cheers and learn about famous athletes and make our own snack stand with hot dogs, slushies and caramel corn.
